The Insecurities of Homeschooling
Do you ever question your ability to be able to school your children? Do you have times when you feel like you are not up for the job??? I am sure some of you have. So the basic question I ask moms when they are starting out on this homeschool journey is… “Is this what the Lord is calling you to do?” If they don’t know I encourage them pray and seek an answer from the Lord. When they get to the point that the “know” this is what the Lord wants them to do then I encourage them to not look back to start walking, walking down the path that is the journey of homeschooling. Whenever we take on a task that is large in nature and has many unknown elements in it then we will always question our ability. But the main thing to remember is that when we question our ability and we question if we have what it takes when things get difficult or we have challenges to take on, then we will always be relying on the Lord to help us meet the needs and to give us the strength. I believe this is what the Lord desires of us; to stay next to Him and walk in faith. He knows our weaknesses, He knows our children and what they need, He knows all these things! I would also encourage you to not look at the world and even at other homeschooling families as a gauge of what you should be doing with your children or where your children should be at, etc… but focus on ‘your’ homeschool and let it be the homeschool that He is helping and directing you to have. Every homeschool should look somewhat different; it should reflect the Hand that led you to make this decision. While you perhaps see some mother being able to do elaborate unit studies and you do not have the energy or time perhaps to do this… that is o.k. the Lord knows this and your child will get from you what ‘he’ needs, as you seek the Lord for direction in your homeschool. If you can’t afford classes or lessons in extracurricular subjects and feel your child is missing out because she does not have ballet or piano, stop and reflect that if the Lord wanted your child to have these things He would provide a way. This does not mean your child has less of an education or their education is being neglected. Also if you feel you just can’t do the job but yet feel like the Lord is calling you in this area, I encourage you to remember Moses… he felt terribly inadequate for the task of leading the Children of Israel out of slavery!! But with God’s mighty hand to lead and guide him, he did!!! We have the same God today helping us with our tasks no matter how small they may be! The main thing that I have focused on over the years is the fact that if God is calling me to do this, then I don’t want to be tempted into thinking that perhaps someone else could do a better job. And if I know that the Lord has called me do this I must have the faith to walk through anything, knowing my strength will come from Him! :) |
