The Reading Room My children are avid readers. I love to read to them, but confess that I don’t do it for my younger children as much as I did for my older children. I guess I go through seasons when I read a lot to them and then seasons when it's hit and miss. I have always tried to choose good quality classic books for my children. Classic books have plots that are more involved and vocabulary that is more challenging. When I read these types of books to my children it builds their attention span and helps increase their vocabulary. When they continue reading these books on their own it builds their reading skills and increase reading comprehension. Classic books can also teach them about times and places in ways that are much more exciting than a text book could ever be.
For my upper grade children (7th and up) I have used a history program from a company called Beautiful Feet Books. It uses classic literature to teach history and it is wonderful.
This last summer I read The Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola (CBD and Timberdoodle both sell this) and she has a great section on reading classic books and all the wonderful benefits for a child.
Here is a list that my children gave me when I asked for their favorite books and authors. If you are wondering what to read when you go to the library here is a list to get you started.
A great resource for reading classic books to younger children is called Five In A Row. I have used this and love it! I was able to find most of the needed books in my library. I highly recommend this for the 4 to 8 year old group.
